Edwin Meuchel

1936 ~ 2024

The family of Edwin George Meuchel regrets to announce his peaceful passing at the age of 88 years on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Edwin was born on May 8, 1936 to Tillie and John Meuchel in Maple Creek, SK. His father, John, passed when Edwin was one year old so Edwin spent much of his early years on his grandparents’ farm in the Blumenfeld area close to Prelate, SK. The young boy loved the freedom of helping on the farm, and it was there that he developed his lifelong love of horses. He went to Prelate School, then in grades 9 and 10 he had the opportunity to attend St. Thomas College in North Battleford, SK where he played hockey on the college team. He then returned to Prelate to complete his education. The city lights of Calgary beckoned this young, adventurous man so he moved to work at Calgary Power and play hockey. While there, a romance kindled with a hometown girl named Dolores Hoffart. Realizing they had a pretty good thing, the couple moved back to Prelate, where they married on February 22, 1960, the last couple to do so in the Blumenfeld Church. Carol Ann was born a year later, and Mark, Glen, and Troy followed. Edwin worked at St. Angela’s Academy, and farmed his grandparents’ land with his Uncle Pat. After retiring from the Academy after 47 years, Edwin enjoyed travelling, camping, golfing, hockey, and watching his beloved Blue Jays. He and Dolores moved to Medicine Hat in 2013. Edwin was predeceased by his father, John in 1937; his mother, Tillie in 1988; his sister, Marlene Materi in 2013; nephews, Tim and Darvin, and niece, Cindy. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dolores (nee Hoffart); his daughter, Carol Ann; sons, Mark (Sandy), Glen (Pauline) and Troy (Jami) along with10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his nieces, Jackie, Lila, Joanne, and nephew, Tom. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road SE, Medicine Hat on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Iqbal Khurshid celebrant. Interment will be held at a later date at the Blumenfeld Church Cemetery.
