Edward Lloyd Hirsch passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at the age of 79 years, beloved husband of Frances “Fran” Hirsch of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory four children, Michael (Dominique), Darren (Denise), Janelle (Roger) Kochie and Jason; his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Katalena, Juliana, Rebecca, Joshua, Justin (his daughter Adriana), Christine (Kyle Radford, and their son Sawyer), Tanischa, Cassidy, Jayden, Rylie and Lucas; one brother Charles (Michelle) Hirsch; one sister Ieona (Tony) Wuitchik; two uncles, Jim Hirsch and Jack Bischoff as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Kasper Hirsch; one great granddaughter Aria Hirsch and Fran’s parents, Oliver and Eva Ulmer. Edward Lloyd Hirsch was born on July 13, 1939 in Leader Saskatchewan the oldest of three children, to parents Kasper and Helen. He grew up on the farm south of Prelate, Saskatchewan and attended Catholic school at the nunnery in Prelate. He was very proud of his German heritage and humble upbringing. He fondly told many tales of him and his buddies terrorizing the back roads and getting scolded by the police. That always gave him a chuckle. Ed was a great goalie in hockey and an amazing shortstop in fastpitch representing Prelate proudly and later Medicine Hat. He moved to Medicine Hat in 1963, where he met his love, Frances Ulmer. Ed and Fran were married for over 53 years and had four wonderful children. Together they both loved to dance the polka to old country music. Construction work led Ed to many communities in Alberta over his 50 year career as a Journeyman Carpenter and Site Superintendent most notably remembering walking the girders of high rise buildings as the floors were being built, pouring concrete from sun up to sun down and in many cases throughout the night. This was during the early 70’s boom of downtown Calgary. He loved working with his hands and getting the job done right. Many a time he went head-to-head with whoever to make sure things were done properly. Ed loved coaching his kids in various sports and was proud to pass his skills and knowledge onto them. Dad loved his sportsnet on TV. To this day, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays have a special place in his heart; in fact the day Gibbons was given his walking papers was a very happy day for him. There was always a special gleam in his eye for each and every one of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ed considered himself a simple man; hardworking, fresh air, family time and finding the odd fishing hole. He spent many summers at their cabin in Elkwater. He loved his time there. He will be missed by all who knew him. The funeral mass was celebrated in Holy Family Parish Monday, May 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Vijaya Bathineni celebrant. Those who wish to remember Ed with a donation, may do so online to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alberta Lung Association.
