Austin Edward Curtin was born in Sunderland, Ontario on June 20, 1941 and passed away in Medicine Hat, Alberta on Saturday June 15, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Marilyn Curtin and his three daughters Cheryl Dodge (David) of Ajax, Ontario, Kimberley Knight (Steven Pudwell) of Medicine Hat and Suzanne Curtin (Shane Chisholm) of Calgary; two grandchildren, Matthew and Nicole Dodge of Ajax Ontario; and his siblings Gerard (Andrea) Curtin, Clara Braiser and Yvonne (Cal) Holland. Austin also leaves behind several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Madeline and Clare and his siblings Rosalie and Brian.
Austin started his retail career with Zellers in 1959 and then in 1975 made the monumental decision to move to Canadian Tire. After a store in Aylmer, Ontario and one in Marystown, Newfoundland, in 1980, he and Marilyn decided to embark on the exciting opportunity to open what was to become an extremely successful store in Medicine Hat, Alberta. After 37 years of remarkable service to Canadian Tire, his community, his staff and his customers, Austin retired in 2013. He served on the Canadian Tire Corporation’s Board of Directors for 10 years and the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors for four years. In 2014, Austin was named Medicine Hat College’s Business Person of the Year, and received an honorary degree in 2016. Austin was proud to be a Canadian Tire Dealer and had a deep respect for his community. He was giving and supportive of those around him. His wisdom, dry humour, and love of life will be missed.
His family would like to give their thanks to Caring Hearts for their unwavering and exceptional care for Austin over the past few years, and while he only spent a short time there, the family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Sarah and the staff at Riverview.
An informal opportunity to share memories with Austin’s family will take place at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1st . Austin had two main pet peeves: Getting up early and going to bed early. In keeping with that, Austin’s funeral will take place at 1:00 p.m. on July 2, 2019 at Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road S.E.). In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation may do so to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program at jumpstart.canadiantire.ca or to the Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta, Rm # 104, 430 6 Ave SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 2S8 (cfsea.ca).
