Edmund Hirch
1929 ~ 2019
Edmund Hirch of Bow Island, Alberta, has gone to be with his Lord, passing away at the Bow Island Health Centre on Friday, May 31, 2019, at the age of 89 years. Ed will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruby; their three children: Richard (Barbara), David (Janet) and Christine (Darren) as well as eight grandchildren, Grayson Aliya, Benjamin, Alexander, Ariana, Anika, Audra and Kristopher. He was predeceased by his daughter, Paula as well as his siblings, Rosalie, Otto, Alfred and Reinhold. Ed was born in Poland in a German colony. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1951, arriving in Lethbridge, Alberta. As the immigration of the family was sponsored by the Canadian Lutheran World Relief, their first two years in Canada were under contract to hoe sugar beets. Using his German training, he started up again in his trade of baking. Through the local Lutheran Church he met and married Ruby in 1956. In 1963, they followed his passion for farming, moving to Bow Island where they started and successfully grew their grain and cattle operation. Ed was known for his hard work and long hours as he built up his operation for over 54 years. Besides his passion for farming, Ed was very involved in Zion Lutheran Church and other organizations such as Unifarm, United Farmers of Alberta and the local Rural Electrification Association. Ed loved to entertain and was famous for making kuchen, sticky buns and his world famous BBQ steak. One of Opa’s favourite things was baking with his grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at the Bow Island Pleasant View Lodge and the Bow Island Health Centre for their special care that they provided to Ed for the last two years. A Celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 104 – 2 Avenue West, Bow Island, on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mac de Waal officiating. Interment will follow at the Bow Island Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Golden Age Centre, 206 – 5 Avenue East, Bow Island. Memorial donations in Ed’s name may be made directly to the Canadian Lutheran World Relief, 177 Lombard Avenue #600, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0W5 or to the Bow Island and District Health Foundation, PO Bag 3990, Bow Island, Alberta, T0K 0G0.
