It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Derek on February 2, 2018 at the age of 67 years. Derek was born on June 19, 1950, in Liverpool, England to the late Captain Alfred Werner and Evelyn (Campbell) Werner. The Werner family lived in Camberley, England until leaving for Canada May 25, 1965. Derek attended school at Alexandra Junior High and Medicine Hat High School. He continued his education at the Medicine Hat College and University of Lethbridge where he received his Alberta Teaching Certificate. Derek taught high school in Rocky Mountain House. Realizing teaching wasn’t his passion he enrolled at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa receiving his Doctor of Chiropractic in October 1977. Derek then returned to Medicine Hat where he started a very successful practice which continued for 40 years. Because of his love for animals, Derek returned to the United States and received his Animal Chiropractic Certificate. At this time he was one of only four chiropractors in Alberta who treated house pets and farm animals besides their regular practice. Derek retired in 2016 due to health reasons. Derek was a long time member and held many positions with the Medicine Hat Jaycees, and Rotary Club. He was also very proud to have served on the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors. Derek loved flying his plane, bow hunting, fishing, gardening and music. He especially loved playing his guitar and played in numerous bands over the years. Derek enjoyed going on many bike tours with his “biking buddies” and occasionally was Santa on the annual “Toy Run”. Derek’s memory will be cherished by his wife Penny Yake; brothers, Steven (Cecelia) of Victoria, Phillip of Medicine Hat, sisters, Susan Needham of Medicine Hat and Beth Garn (Earl Haag) of Sylvan Lake and numerous nieces and nephews. Sincere thanks and much gratitude to the amazing staff at Carmel Hospice for the incredible care Derek received. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.
