It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel “Dan” Wingenbach of Medicine Hat, on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at the age of 94 years. He was predeceased by his loving wife Angelina, son Randall, sisters, brothers, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. He is survived by five children: Terry Wingenbach, David (Rita) Wingenbach, Geri (Frank) Hecker, Jeanette (Ron) Bechtold and James Wingenbach. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, his sister Helen, sisters-in-law Jean Wingenbach, Clara Crews and Ester Wagner. Dan was born on May 30, 1923 in a sod hut in Southern Saskatchewan. Dan was a farmer and maintained a keen interest in farming throughout his life. As a young man he played the banjo in a band with his brothers. He loved music and loved to dance. When the band disbanded, he took up the harmonica and singing along with the songs on the radio. He knew the words to most of the songs and particularly loved the yodelling. At the age of 94, he still played his harmonica although complained that he did not have the breath he needed to do it well. To supplement his farm income during the lean years, Dan became a well known finisher for farm cisterns and farm house chimneys. He later took on a rural school bus route. During the winter this meant getting up as early at 3:00 a.m. to ensure that he could heat up the battery and get the bus running by 7:00 a.m. to start his route. When Dan retired from the farm he and Lena moved into Medicine Hat. He continued to work first as a maintenance man for a local motel and then later seasonal work for the City of Medicine Hat at the water treatment plant and watering boulevards and parks. Dan loved sports. For many years he was a pitcher at numerous ball tournaments until his arm gave out. Later he could be found golfing, curling and bowling or watching the games on television. Dan loved spending time with people. He had a good sense of humour, loved to laugh, and share a joke. In his early 80’s, Dan purchased his first computer. He learned to send emails and checked Facebook daily to keep track of his grandchildren. The computer gave him many hours of entertainment both in playing games like checkers, freestyle and solitaire, drawing farm pictures using Microsoft Paint as well as hours of watching and listening to Danny O’Donnell on YouTube. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 – 10:55 a.m. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in the Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Albert Sayson celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
