Christie Brodie
1983 – 2023
Christina Hope Brodie, of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2023, at the age of 39 years. Christina spent last ten years battling cancer; at the end, she was surrounded by friends and family, and she was smiling.
Born on November 5, 1983, in Edmonton, Alberta. Christina (or Christi as we all knew her) was adopted by Norman and Leslea Brodie. She was always a very determined and happy child who was curious about everything and insisted on trying things herself – often learning important life lessons “the hard way” (which was a trait she carried right through life).
Christi had a contagious smile. She could be persuasive and always had ideas of how she and her friends could spend their time (often a bit mischievously). This left Christi with many incredible memories and no shortage of stories to tell. Christi was a loyal person who cared deeply for others.
Christi had a lifelong passion for theatre and graduated high school from Victoria School of the Arts. Christi’s enthusiasm for the arts continued and she participated in producing musical and community theatre in Medicine Hat. Christi used her acting skills with ST/OPS Tactical Training Canada for which she received the honour of the Commander’s Coin for her dedication and excellence.
She was incredibly creative and constantly found new ways to express this creativity; painting, jewellery making, as well as cooking and exploring new cuisines. She loved perfecting recipes and cooking for her friends.
Christi had a thirst for knowledge. She loved politics, the British Monarchy, world history, finance, and current events. Christi would seek out information and devour it. She would excitedly discuss any topic with anyone at any time, for hours. To try and use this power for good, Christi enrolled in Political Science at the University of Lethbridge; however, she was unable to continue due to her battle with cancer.
Due to her steadfast moral compass and because she could not bare to see injustice in the world, Christi was known to be an advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves. She was charming and insightful and was always ready with a listening ear for those dear to her.
Anyone that knew Christi knew how much she loved all animals, especially dogs. She was a devoted “dog-mom” to her rescue dog Tiny; whom she would often say, rescued her. Going on long walks with Tiny helped Christi get through some of her toughest days.
There is no shortage of things that Christi loved. She adored Harry Potter and Robbie Williams. She would tell you that N’SYNC was better than Backstreet Boys any day of the week. Christi could never turn down a blue-rare steak or a pint of Guinness. Over COVID, she developed a green thumb and loved her plants. She loved espresso, eating cookie dough straight from the tube, pound cake, and coke-bottle candies. Her favourite season was winter and loved public radio. She adored scrolling through Redit threads and watching Ted Lasso, both of which she would often do wearing a tiara. She enjoyed travelling and experiencing all that she could about the culture of where she went.
Christi loved the X-men and collecting coins. One of her favourite ways to spend the day was to go thrifting; searching for vintage teacups or uranium glass and she made a point to stop at a thrift shop in every city she visited. Christi could not pass up a “treasure” and loved having company to join her “on the hunt.”
Christi was strong-willed, independent, and stubborn; but those traits undoubtedly gave her the strength to face everything that life threw at her. Cancer took a lot from Christi, but it never took her sense of humour and she refused to let cancer define her. She was fearless, quick-witted, and had a generous spirit.
Christi is survived by her parents Norman and Leslea Brodie, her brother Michael (Merina) Brodie, sister Karen (Brian) Lundell, and nephews Sebastian and Alexander, along with her grandmother Ruth Harris and numerous extended relatives. Christi will be forever missed by her family, close friends, and all of those who knew and loved her.

While those of us left behind hate that you are no longer here Christi, we are comforted knowing that you are finally free from pain.
