Cameron “Cam” Daniel Potts
January 29, 1972 ~ June 4, 2020
Cam will be greatly missed by his wife Alison “Ali” Potts and their blended family Sadie, Carter, Hudson and Nash; his siblings, Lindon (Karen) Potts and their children, Koltan and Klayton; Glendon (Paula) Potts and their son Carter; Jacquie (Lonnie) Hutchison and their children Camryn and Morgan; Ali’s family: his in-law’s Lorelie (Rick) Whelan and Ken Conn; her siblings, Eric Whelan, Jessica Whelan and her daughter Sienna; and Sam Conn.
On Thursday, June 4th Cameron Potts passed away at the age of 48 after an extended battle with Leukemia. The cancer, in a typically cowardly fashion, had to enlist the help of H1N1, West Nile, Meningitis, Pneumonia, ARDS and a myriad of other illnesses in order to make it a fair fight with the tough farm boy.
Pottsy grew up in Saskatchewan, where he learned important life skills like riding dirt bikes, shotgunning Pilsners and joyriding combines. He had his mom’s warmth and his dad’s stubbornness; which made punishing him for breaking curfew with his siblings and getting into dust-ups at the bar nearly impossible.
After joining the Old’s Fire Department where he managed to complete his 1001s and despite late nights at the rodeo he was hired on with the Prince Albert Fire Department in 1998. In 2004 he joined the Medicine Hat Fire Service where he ascended to the rank of Lieutenant—and more importantly—Mr. March.
Brave, selfless, easy-going… All qualities that he put on his match.com profile. It worked, and Cam married his soulmate Alison in 2018, joining their beautiful families together. The immeasurable amount of love he had for Ali and the kids is a trademark of Pottsy’s legacy. He could often be found hunting with the boys, tuning up bikes, helping the kids with schoolwork, guiding them through personal struggles, working out (upper body) and planning their next tropical vacation.
The power of Pottsy’s character was felt by everyone who had the honour of working with him. His ability to stay calm, collected and ready to help anyone in need made him a pillar of strength on the fire ground. If you were looking for a harder working firefighter at or away from the station you’d be SOL. Even as an officer he would routinely assign himself with the attack team just for the opportunity to “kick it in the dink” one more time. If Cam wasn’t on the nozzle he was humping hose, tearing down (and occasionally jumping through) walls, or mentoring younger members on scene.
Cam’s energy overflowed into every aspect of his life. He met challenges with the grace and patience of a man who had been through hell; yet he always remained optimistic no matter what life threw at him. Cam had a sparkle in his eyes that was not just the result of three coffees and half a tin of chew by 10am. His smile, his laugh, his barrel chest, his skinny legs… He could change the entire tone of the day just by walking through the door. His superpower was compassion; You always felt better being around him.
The countless lives that Cam touched will remember him as an amazing father, a devoted husband, a loving brother, a fiercely loyal friend and an example of the kind of person we all strive to become. Cam’s spirit lives on through his immediate, extended and Fire Service family.
