Betty Denise McDowell

Betty Denise McDowell passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at the age of 79 years, beloved wife of Doug McDowell of Medicine Hat. She also leaves to cherish her memory her children, Blair McDowell and Mark (Jillian) McDowell and their children, Finley, Max, Emery and Madden; one brother, Robert Newson; two sisters, Shirley (Sandy) Hucul and Carol (Richard) Byers; one brother-in-law, Dr. Grant (Donna) McDowell; two sisters-in-law, Mavis Hill and Janice (Gerald) Garrett as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Freela Newson; one brother, Larry Newson and one sister, Merilyn Stevenson. Betty was born and raised in the Kindersley, Saskatchewan area and graduated with a teaching degree from the University of Saskatchewan. She then began teaching in Maple Creek where she met Doug McDowell, whom she married in 1959. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Medicine Hat, where she would teach in the Medicine Hat School District and Doug would begin a fifty year career with McMcMillan Transport. Betty was the anchor for her whole family. Her love and encouragement reached far beyond to all those who knew her. Her most cherished job was super grandma. She will be missed by all. The funeral service will be held in Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Ave SE) on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. with Dr. Grant McDowell and Rev. John Marshall officiating.
