Bertha Mierau
November 8, 1927 ~ April 29, 2018
Bertha Annie Mierau (nee Wurtz) passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at the age of 90 years. Mom is survived by her daughters, Sandra “Sandi” Toth and her children, Vali (Aron), Chad (Tricia), Kurt (April) and Cale (Natalia) and Jeanette “Netter” Devore and her children, Roy and Lisa; 11 great-grandchildren; extended family; numerous cousins; Auntie Connie and Mom’s dedicated friends and honourary daughters, Carol Nelson and Shawn Williamson. Bertha was predeceased by her husband of 24 years, Henry Mierau; son-in-law, Russ Devore; infant great-grandson, Tyler Gabriel Devore and her six siblings. Mom was born on November 8, 1927, in Asquith, Saskatchewan in a small prairie house, the youngest of seven children. As a young girl, mom enjoyed watching baseball games and riding horses. After high school, mom worked as a switchboard operator and confessed to listening in on her brother-in-law-to-be rehearsing his lines before he called his sweetheart. After marriage, mom and dad moved to Abbotsford and then north to Dawson Creek. Later mom moved to Medicine Hat, Didsbury and back to to Medicine Hat. In the early 1960’s, mom worked as a cashier in a second hand store and in the 1970’s after dad died, our home became the neighbourhood day care. She always had a waiting list since mom was the best potty trainer in the land. She then helped out with all six of her grandkids, Vali, Chad, Kurt and Cale Toth and Roy and Lisa Devore. Mom liked to play crib, whist and scrabble. She loved “The Price is Right”, a tidy home, naps, black jelly beans and anyone else’s cooking. She made the best apple pie and the worst roast beef. Affectionately known as “Oola” by her sons-in-law, “Little Bert” by her siblings, “Grams Bear” or “Gramma” by her grandkids, “Great” by her great-grandkids, “Bingo Bert” by her fellow dabbers and “Grasshopper” by her card buddies. Mom was left handed and pronounced the number “Three” as “Thuddee”. Her favourite sayings were, “a little dab of zambuk will cure that”, “soak it in a little Bio-add” and “I missed the jackpot by 0 sixty-thuddee.” Mom had a large collection of shoes and coats for all seasons and her wardrobe was always colour coordinated, yet she wanted to wear a nightie to her final resting place. Being a strong believer in the Bible, mom was “ready to go” for years. Until we meet again mom, we will all miss you! A gathering of family and friends will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2018. As an expression of sympathy, go visit your gramma and if you don’t have one, go find one.
