It is with both sadness and joy that we announce the passing of Bernard “Ben” Martin who passed into glory peacefully at the age of 91years on Friday, March 23, 2018, with his family at his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Doris, sons Laren and Daryl (Loretta), his grandchildren Erin (Tim) Hennigar, Elaine (Jeff) Campbell, Rylan (Jen) Martin, and Curtis, Colby (Courtney) and Jeffrey Schnell, great grandchildren Jaidyn and Brenna Hennigar; Isaac, Lincoln and Avery Campbell; Louisa Martin; Victoria, Xander and Ryen Schnell. He is also survived by his siblings, Herb Martin, Esther Muhlbeier, Marvin (Marijka) Martin, and Melvin Martin as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ben was born on a farm in the Golden Prairie district in May, 1926. Throughout his life he loved farming and all that went with it. He loved to work with animals and knew how to respect and care for them. In many ways this same ability helped him to relate to people. Ben was a quiet man affectionately called “Gentle Ben”. He never wanted to be the centre of attention. He put others first especially his family, his church and his neighbours. He loved to sing and he could be heard singing bass in choirs, quartets and duets. He and Doris sang duets on many occasions. He believed music cheered up the soul.
Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the church from 12 noon to 12:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church (606 – 7 Street SW) with Pastor Bob Findley officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Ben’s memory may be made to South Country Village 1720 Bell Street SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 5G1.
