1935 ~ Anton Dirk ~ 2022
Anton Dirk (Papa Tony) passed away in Medicine Hat peacefully in his sleep February 23, 2022 at the age of 87. He was predeceased by his wife Rose and two grandsons Jason Miller and Ryan Beck, and is lovingly remembered by his children Larry (Glenny) Dirk, Donna (Vern) Arnold, Arlene (Betty) Sequoia, Darwin (Lori) Dirk and Deanna (Scott) Peslari, along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he adored.
Dad was born in Prelate, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farms in Empress, Alberta and Rutland, BC. He later went on to graduate from Calgary SAIT as a mechanic, before moving back home to help his parents run the family farm, garage and pool hall in Empress, where he met the love of his life, Rose. Dad happily adopted her four children and went on to add one more to the family. Later they relocated to Medicine Hat, where they ran the Black and White truck stop and dad was employed at Dom Glass in Redcliff. The family also moved to Pincher Creek to operate the Gulf station, before returning to Medicine Hat to run the Hat Motel and where dad worked at BATUS as a mechanic until his retirement.
Dad enjoyed all sorts of activities, such as family campouts, baseball, swimming, skating, fishing and water skiing, but his big passion was snow skiing and in his late 50’s snowboarding. He took many trips to the ski hills, often accompanied by one of his grandchildren. For his 80th birthday he traveled on his own to Bali to visit his oldest grandson Jason, and for years praised it as the trip of a lifetime! Dad always loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and you would often find him watching a hockey game or some other event the kids were involved in.
After retiring, Dad and Mom moved to Redcliff where they stayed during the winter months, but during the summertime you could find them camping first at Rattlesnake then later at Cavan Lake, where they eventually took over as caretakers for a number of years. After Mom passed away, Dad stayed on as caretaker at the lake, but still managed to sneak in a few casino trips with family and friends. Dad was a very social guy and loved talking and visiting with everyone he met, and he always had a story to share. He will be happily remembered by everyone that knew him, especially for his smile and stories.
