Nov 6, 1941– Andrew James Stratton -July 6, 2026

 

A life defined by service, integrity, quiet strength and unwavering kindness. It is with immense sadness that the family of Andrew “Andy” James Stratton announces his passing.  Andy was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, as the youngest child and only son of Andrew Thomson Stratton and Margaret Ann Stratton (Bullock). Andy joined the cadet unit attached to the 102 Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery at the age of 12. In 1957 he enlisted as a reservist in the 102 Field Battery, which later changed into the 18 Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Engineers. For many years, during the Cold War period, Andy was employed full-time as a drill and small arms instructor, training regular and reserve force recruits.  He retired from the reserves in 1969. Andy went on to enjoy a 40-year career in the newspaper industry, including 31 of those at The Calgary Herald and was a life member of the Calgary Press Club. Andy devoted many years to the Royal Canadian Legion, serving in various capacities, including President of the Robertson Memorial Legion in 2008-2009. He married the love of his life, Noreen (Hehr) Emshey-Stratton, in 1975. Andy was predeceased by his wife in 2009, parents and five older sisters – Margaret “Peggy” Baumbach, Jessie Eckman, Jeannie Gough, Dora Weiss and Shirley Friberg. A special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s and Age Care Riverview for the friendship and loving care given to Andrew. Left to lovingly remember Andy for his quick wit and cheeky grin are numerous extended family members and friends. A Graveside service will be held at the Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, 5758–6198 Gershaw Dr SW in Medicine Hat at 11:00 AM on July 11, 2026. A time of remembrance will be held at the Robertson Memorial Legion Branch #17 at 702 2nd St. SE, Medicine Hat, following the Graveside service. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Robertson Memorial Legion, 702 2 St SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 0B3 or a charity of your choice.
