Harrell’s grand slam sinks Mavs in Saturday clash with Prospects

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A sixth inning grand slam wasn’t too grand for the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Saturday evening, blown out 11-3 in the second game of their series with the Edmonton Prospects.

Edmonton third baseman Edgar Harrell blasted a four-run shot over the wall at Athletic Park, putting a dagger into the Mavericks hopes trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning.

The Prospects got out to that four-run lead off a Medicine Hat error and sacrifice-fly in the third inning, before errors would come back to bit the Mavericks in the fourth.

Tanner Roundy followed that up with a ground out to drive home Jake MacDonald to put Edmonton ahead by four.

Roundy racked up his second RBI of the night in the sixth inning with a fielder’s choice, before Harrell stepped to the plate with the bases loaded for his first home run of the season to make it a 9-0 score.

That home run spelled the end of the night for Medicine Hat starting pitcher Evan Sutta, who got the hook after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits over five and two-third innings.

Mavericks reliever Dylan Sund didn’t fare much better, pitching into a jam in the top of the seventh and walking in MacDonald with the bases loaded to stretch Edmonton’s lead to 10 runs.

Still sitting with just one out in the seventh inning, Prospects outfielder Travis Hunt flew out to centre field but was able to cash Javier Ramirez with ease.

Trailing by 11 runs entering the eighth inning, Medicine Hat’s bats finally caught fire with Austin Sojka driving in his 10th run of the season off a putout to get the Mavericks on the board.

Slugger Sal Rodriguez made an impact shortly afterwards with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 11-3.

That would be the highlight of the evening for Medicine Hat though, as the Mavericks went three-up, three-down in the ninth inning to see their two-game win streak shattered.

Nolan Rattai was the lone Medicine Hat batter to rake in two hits on the night, with Medicine Hat being outhit by Edmonton by a 13-8 count.

Dropping to an 8-13 record on the season, continue to sit in fifth place in the WCBL’s West Division and are seven and half games back of division-leading Okotoks.

Splitting the first two games of their series with the Prospects, the rubber match between Medicine Hat and Edmonton will be played on Sunday at 2:05 pm at Athletic Park.
