Mavericks bullpen falls apart in 15-3 loss, swept by Weyburn

WEYBURN, SK – Just like it did earlier this week, the eighth inning caused fits for the Medicine Hat Mavericks in a 15-3 drubbing at the hands of the Weyburn Beavers on Saturday evening.

Trailing 3-1 in a game that was still very much in reach, the Mavericks bullpen crumbled in the eighth inning by giving up 12 runs to gift-wrap the two points for Weyburn 15-3, sweeping the three-game set against Medicine Hat.

Beavers left fielder Marcus Catalano starred with a three-hit, four RBI night including a solo home run in the second inning to kick off the scoring.

John Velasco was able to keep up his hot streak in the fourth inning for the Mavericks however, as the outfielder smacked a double to centre field to score Austin Sojka to tie the game at 1-1.

Mavericks starting pitcher Evan Sutta was able to pitch into the seventh inning until giving up a two-run shot from James McCallum that put Weyburn ahead by a pair.

Sutta left the game after six and one-third innings, giving up three earned runs on just four hits with four strikeouts to his name.

Disaster struck for the Mavericks in the eighth with Friday night’s walk-off hero Jack Barrie kicking off the inning with a solo home run off Hunter Cooper to increase the score to 4-1.

Cooper’s relief appearance would be a turbulent one, allowing a series of base hits to the outfield with runners on to cash in five more Beavers runs before getting the hook.

Jon Guardado and Kevin Santana didn’t fare much better with Weyburn bringing home six more runs, including home runs from Barrie and Catalano who almost made three trips to the plate each in the eighth inning alone.

Santana was finally able to sit down Tyler Scott on strikes, ending the marathon inning which saw Medicine Hat trailing 15-1.

Freddy Walker and Collin Klingensmith were able to drive in two more runs for the Mavericks in the top of the ninth, but the damage had been done to hand Weyburn the convincing win.

Medicine Hat did not commit any errors in the loss, while the team’s bats finished just one hit shy of tying Weyburn’s 14 hits on the evening.

Losing all three games on their eastern road swing in Weyburn, the 6-9 Mavericks have lost their last five games and seven of their last nine.

The Mavericks’ next chance at turning around the ship will come on Sunday for their annual ‘Plaid for Dad’ home game on Father’s Day against the Moose Jaw Miller Express (7-7) at 2:05 pm.
