The science in the soil; preparing a world-class chuckwagon track

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Come 7:00 p.m. the show begins, and the world’s best chuckwagon drivers rip into the turf in pursuit of the week’s biggest paycheque.

But in the days, weeks, and months leading up, the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede ground-crew puts in countless hours of hard work to prepare the track to ideal conditions.

It takes a keen eye, and a whole lot of science to manicure the soil into perfect condition. After all, it’s not your ‘usual’ dirt from the badlands of Alberta.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with general manager Jim MacArthur to learn more about the detail that goes into preparing a world-caliber chuckwagon track.
