Weather advisory issued for Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Environment Canada has issued an advisory for Medicine Hat and the surrounding area, saying conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds in the region.

According to the advisory, storm spotters southwest of Medicine Hat reported seeing funnel clouds around 12:30 p.m. It is expected the threat for funnel clouds will continue through the afternoon.

Environment Canada says these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms, and the weak rotation is not normally a danger near the ground. However, there is a possibility the rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

The advisory includes Medicine Hat, Cypress County and parts of the County of Newell and the County of 40 Mile.
