WEYBURN, SK — The Weyburn Beavers needed all hands on deck to halt a late rally from the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Thursday night.

The league’s hottest team snuck out a 4-3 victory over the defending league champion Mavs to push their win streak to 11 games. The two squads will convene for the second of three matches at Tom Laing Park.

Medicine Hat, meanwhile, drops a season-high third-straight contest, but saw consistent progress throughout their roster after back-to-back double-digit setbacks at Athletic Park.

Weyburn, who hasn’t lost a game since its second of the campaign, improves to 11-2 and remain firmly in first place in the Western Canadian Baseball League. The Mavericks are now below a .500 record for the first time this season at 6-7.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the sixth, Medicine Hat finally wore out the arm of Beavers starter Darrick Watts. Colton Wright scored the Mavericks first run of the night on a wild-pitch, and Sal Rodriguez followed him home on a walk.

Rodriguez notched his second run of the evening on a fielder’s choice single from Freddy Walker. Russell Strilchuk finished the game with the Mavericks best batting clip at two-for-three.
