Bombers double up Mavs 10-5

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Mavericks woes continued Wednesday night, falling to the Brooks Bombers 10-5 at Athletic Park.

One night after allowing the Fort McMurray Giants to score nine in the eighth inning, the Brooks Bombers chalked up six in the seventh. It’s the first time the Bombers have won back-to-back games this season.

Despite rebounding with four runs in the bottom half of the seventh, the five-run deficit with two innings remaining was too much for the Mavs to overcome.

Success at the dish and the mound has gone awry for the reigning league champions as of late. They’ve scored just five runs over the last 20-innings, culminating with a 12-0 shellacking to the Giants the previous night. This is on top of allowing a combined 22 runs over the last two games.

McCoy Pearce was dynamite at the plate for the Bombers, going three-for-five with three RBI and two runs. Jarrett Joyner allowed five hits and one run over 6.0 innings.

Medicine Hat’s first run of the night came in the fourth frame while trailing 2-0 — a solo-homer from Austin Sojka.

Sojka batted in the first of four runs in the seventh, followed by a two-RBI-double from local product Nolan Rattai.

Medicine Hat out-hit their Highway 1 rivals 9-8, with starter Brandon Ponticelli taking the lone error. Ponticelli finished the night pitching 6.1 innings and allowing eight hits and seven earned runs. Hunter Cooper struggled as his replacement, seeing five batters over one out, and allowing three earned runs. Dylan Sund took over from Cooper to close a seventh-inning to forget, allowing two walks for runs on three batters.

Flynn Ridley closed out the final two innings on a good note for the Mavericks pitching staff, striking out four of six batters without allowing a hit.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth frame, the Mavericks had a great opportunity to cut the deficit and potentially take the lead. Cameron Pope took the plate with bases loaded and two out, but Joyner zombied the first-year infielder for one of his four strikeouts to end the frame.

The Bombers remain last-place in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Western Division with an improved 3-10 record. The Mavericks are now 6-6 and tied with the Bulls for third in the West.

The Mavericks now hit the road to Weyburn, SK to open a three-game series against the Beavers on Thursday (7:05 p.m.).
