MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city’s minor lacrosse teams are hoping to keep their successful seasons going this weekend.

The Medicine Hat Lacrosse Association is hosting its annual Lax to the Max tournament, which gets underway Friday. More than 30 teams from across the Prairies are taking part in the tournament in multiple divisions.

The Midget Sun Devils, who have lost few games in recent years, are among the teams taking part. Coach Ryan Ertmoed says the attitude and effort from the team is helping fuel their success, even during a busy week.

“They don’t get much of a break, but they’re still here and ready to go every day,” he said.

Many of the players, including veterans Callen Prosofsky and Josh Drefs have grown up playing with the same teammates, which has formed a unique bond on the team.

“We’re coming together as a group in the dressing room, just passing well and shooting from outside, getting some nice shots and hitting the cutters,” said Drefs.

“You get a lot more chemistry, and you get to work with guys and know where they like to be on the court,” said Prosofsky.

Ertmoed, who is also the president of the Medicine Hat Lacrosse Association, is praising the level of play from minor lacrosse teams. During a recent tournament in Strathmore, five teams game away with medals, with three, including the midget team, winning gold.

He’s hoping the tournament is a harbinger of what is to come this weekend.

“It should be pretty good,” he said. “I believe all of the teams can bring home some sort of medal.”

The tournament wraps up Sunday.
