Medicine Hat, AB – For over two thirds of Canadians, their morning cup of coffee is an important part of their day.

But for one group in Medicine Hat, coffee is more than just a daily ritual.

That’s why Kyle Hodgman, Joey Heinrichs and Josh Swanson started Coffee Club over a year ago.

“Coffee club is a subscription business that curates coffee from specialty roasters across Canada.” Heinrichs explained. “We get three different coffees from each roaster every month and we ship it out for our subscriber base.”

Heinrichs said the idea of opening a coffee based company begin when he started to learn about what specialty coffee was and how every stage of processing could be traced, right down to the region or farm the bean was grown at.

He then approached two of his friends Swanson and Hodgman, who he shared his passion for coffee with.

“A lot of it was just trying to find our right fit in the market and figuring out what we wanted offer. We had the ideas of wanting to share awesome Canadian roasted coffee with Canada. But it was about figuring out the right way to do that.” Hodgman said.

The trio came up with a subscription based model where they send customers three different types of coffees from an ethically sourced Canadian roaster every month.

They decided this was the best model so that they could send out the freshest beans possible and to give coffee drinkers a true chance to experience a roaster.

“Essentially we want to be able to show you want each roaster can provide.” Heinrichs continued. “So there might be a coffee you don’t enjoy, but the other two are phenomenal. So it’s giving kind of a well rounded experience of what each individual roaster.”

With coffee drinkers around the world caring more and more about where their coffee is coming from, Hodgman says the company, who have customers all over the country, are excited to be a part of the movement.

“Now there’s this new wave of coffee where we’re focusing on the farmer, focusing on the process, focusing on the producer, and the roaster. And what comes out of that is just like this coffee that is next level and like fun and exciting and we like love the chance to share that.”
