D Day Ceremonies in France and Canada mark 75th anniversary

TORONTO — Toronto Mayor John Tory called on Canadians to heed the “eternal lessons” of the Second World War as the city commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day this morning.

The Allied invasion of France that turned the tide of the conflict took place on June 6th, 1944.

Events are being held across the country to honour the 14-thousand Canadian soldiers who stormed Juno Beach in Normandy.

In a ceremony on the front steps of Toronto’s Old City Hall, Tory noted that 359 Canadians lost their lives on D-Day, including at least 50 from Toronto.

He added — quote — “It would’ve been hell.”

Captain Martin Maxwell of the Glider Pilot Regiment, British 6th Airborne Division, shared his story in Toronto about being among the first to land in Normandy the night before the invasion.

Maxwell, too, urged Canadians to keep the lessons of the Second World War in their daily thoughts — especially given the dwindling number of living people who experienced it firsthand.
