Medicine Hat, AB – If you stop by Station Coffee downtown, you’ll see a new addition to the side of the building.

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society has teamed up with an artist from Calgary to help give people in the community some more hope.

Peggy Revell, the community education and awareness coordinator with the shelter, says that family violence is something that is usually kept quiet and behind doors.

That’s why she says it was so important to the society to have something out in the open for the public to see and be reminded that it is still an issue.

The mural, painted by artist Sarah Slaughter, took just over a week.

Although they knew the society knew they wanted a mural, Revell said it took them some time to decide what exactly the mural would be of.

“The phrase is ‘Growing Hope in our Community’. We settled on that phrase because when we look at what we do, the work we do, and when we hear feedback from our client, that’s one of the big words we hear. Hope. There is hope for the future.” Revell said. “You may be at a really bad spot right now. You may be experiencing family violence, but there’s always hope for a better future”

As part of the celebration of the mural’s completion, the society will be holding a draw on June 11th for some society merchandise. To enter, take a photo with the mural and tag them on social media.
