Bulls run over Mavs for second straight game

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Lethbridge Bulls needed one big inning to solidify their second straight blow-out over the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

A six-run sixth frame made easy work for the Bulls in an 11-4 victory over the reigning league champions in front of a packed Athletic Park of 2,019 spectators on Monday night.

Both teams are now .500 on their regular season. The Bulls improve to 3-3, while the Mavs are 2-2 after sustaining their first loss at home.

Nicholas Ankermann and Roger Ryley each batted in three runs, with Ryley, Ty Penner and Kaleb Warden collecting two runs each.

Nine of 11 Bulls recorded at least one hit through the game. This comes two days after the Bulls ran over the Mavericks 18-4 at Elks Stadium.

A nightmare sixth inning culminated with a scary scene in the outfield. Julien Ly and John Velasco collided at the center-field warning track attempting to catch a pop fly. Ly’s leg got tangled up on the play, and he was helped off the field by two players after a lengthy delay. He left the game and did not return.

Velasco didn’t need assistance off the field, but also did not return after sustaining an upper-body injury.

Opening night starting pitcher Jaymon Cervantes took over Velasco’s place in center-field, and first-base Cameron Pope subbed in for Ly in left field.

Before Velasco’s departure, he was a key factor in the Mavericks offence. The Californian left the park for the second consecutive home game, driving in two runs in the fourth inning.

Medicine Hat took a 4-3 lead into the fifth, but could not contain Lethbridge’s hot bats. The Bulls outhit the Mavs 14-5.
