BROOKS, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks won their second straight game of the Western Canadian Baseball League season in dominating fashion Friday night.

Taking on the Brooks Bandits in a rematch of Thursday’s home opener, the Mavericks exploded in the seventh inning, eventually coming away with a 14-7 victory at Elks Stadium.

Medicine Hat jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning following a pair of solo home runs by returning vets Nolan Rattai and Sal Rodriguez, but a three-run shot by Brooks’ McCoy Pierce quickly erased that deficit.

Brooks continued to hold a 3-2 lead well into the sixth inning, before Rodriguez smacked his second homer of the night off Bombers starter Jarrett Joyner.

The game swung fully in the Mavericks favour one inning later, putting up five runs in the seventh off a Bombers error, a Rodriguez RBI-double, and a fly-out from Russell Strilchuck.

Medicine Hat’s offence continued to cause Brooks fits over the final two innings, seeing six more runs cross home plate to eventually take home the team’s second victory of the season.

Rodriguez was a force all night, finishing the game with five RBI, four runs and three hits for the Mavericks.

Owen Steele earned the victory on the mound. In six innings, he allowed seven hits, three runs, three errors and struck out five batters.

The Mavericks look to extend their record to 3-0 on Saturday, when they travel to Lethbridge to battle the Bulls. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. at Spitz Stadium.
