MEDICINE HAT, AB — In a dramatic, extra-innings finale featuring comebacks from both teams, the Monsignor McCoy Colts captured the Provincial Tier 1 High School Baseball Championship with a 10-7 win over the Hat High Mohawks at Athletic Park on Wednesday night.

It’s the second consecutive provincial title for the Colts, who finished in a tie for second place with the Mohawks in the south-eastern league standings.

Tied 7-7 in the eighth end, the visiting-dugout Colts bats unloaded for three runs to take a commanding lead into the bottom half.

Despite putting runners on the corners in a desperate comeback attempt, the Mohawks were unable to tie, awarding the Colts the championship banner.

The Mohawks outhit the Colts 14-9, but racked up far more errors at 5-1.

McCoy’s Drew Niwa batted in a pair of runs while going one-for-three at the plate, and Reese Whelan collected the win on the mound pitching the final six innings with five strikeouts and five earned runs.

Kobe Coderre led a well-balanced Mohawks offence going three-for-five at the dish with two RBI, and Felix Miller takes the loss by finishing the game.

McCoy racked up a 6-3 lead after five-and-a-half frames before the Mohawks struck once in the bottom half, and thrice more in the sixth to lead by one.

Needing to score at least one in the seventh to keep their provincial hopes alive, Whelan hit a pop-fly to short-stop that stumped Tory Nelson. The missed catch allowed Cole Rath to score the tying run from third.

Many players from both teams are now directing their attention to American Legion play for the summer, making up the Medicine Hat AA Monarchs and Medicine Hat A Knights.
