MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating provincial recognition.

The chamber was awarded the 2018 Chamber of the Year Award by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce during its 81st Annual General Meeting on Saturday. Medicine Hat was recognized in the category of 651 chamber members and above, the largest category.

“We’re pretty excited that we received this prestigious award,” said Chamber president Sarah MacKenzie. “It showcases the accomplishments we’ve had over the past year.

MacKenzie says the chamber was recognized for its advocacy work, membership growth, and their ability to handle a challenging local economy.

“It shows how we were able to adapt when times were tough, and still grow our membership, and I think we were able to build some really great relationships with the various levels of government and advocate and work with them and keep that going,” she said. “I just think it shows as a community, Medicine Hat as a whole, how we’re resilient.”

It’s the fifth time Medicine Hat has received the award. They were previously named Chamber of the Year in 2015, 2012, 2008 and 2000.

MacKenzie says the Chamber has more than 800 members, and they’re looking to reach 1,000 members by 2025.
