Colts storm back to stun Vauxhall, advance to face Mohawks in provincial final

OKOTOKS, AB – The Alberta Tier I high school provincial baseball championship will feature two Medicine Hat clubs for the second year in a row, but will have to wait a few more days.

The Monsignor McCoy Colts kept their season alive with a wild 8-6 upset victory over the Vauxhall Vikings on Saturday in semi-final action at the Southern Alberta High School Baseball League tournament.

That set up a championship final with the Medicine Hat High Mohawks, which was supposed to have been played on Saturday afternoon in Okotoks.

Inclement weather postponed the gold medal contest however, which will instead be played in Medicine Hat on Wednesday night at Athletic Park.

Cole Rath singled to lead off Saturday’s semi-final contest for the Colts, later scoring off a ground out by Kayden Berndt to make it a 1-0 score.

McCoy struggled for most of the afternoon offensively, held hitless from that point by Vikings starter Brady Howg with Vauxhall holding a 6-1 lead heading to the top of the seventh inning.

With their season on the line, the Colts exploded with a pair of RBI-doubles from Wyatt Study and Drew Niwa, a triple off the bat of Jayden Ball, and a three-run homer from Joel Herron.

Reese Whelen stepped up as the hero in the seventh for McCoy, crushing a two-run shot over the fence to give the Colts an 8-6 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Ball came into the game and locked things down for the save, giving the Colts an incredible semi-final win in the process to advance to the league championship for the second consecutive year.

Colts starter Evan Morrison was pulled from the game after four innings, while Jaden Schwindt picked up the win in relief with two innings of work.

McCoy will try to defend its provincial championship on Wednesday, while the Mohawks will be looking for revenge after settling for silver last year.

Opening pitch for the provincial title is scheduled for 5:30 pm.

Tier II Mohawks eliminated at provincials

A tougher pill to swallow at SAHSBL provincials for the Medicine Hat High Tier II Mohawks, as they were upended on Saturday 16-12 by the Maple Creek Red Sox.

The Mohawks held a 10-8 lead after five and half innings of work on Saturday, but the Red Sox came out in the sixth inning with eight runs to their credit to take the lead for good.

Dylan Lefler was a perfect 5-for-5 at the dish in the loss, knocking in four Mohawks runs while crossing home plate twice himself.

Trevin Ressler and Payton Eddy both had multi-RBI mornings against Maple Creek, while Kevan Schafer was credited with the loss after allowing seven hits and seven earned runs over three and one-third innings.

Final results from the weekend’s Tier II provincials in Pincher Creek were not available at the time of publishing.
