Mohawks advance to provincial baseball final, Colts qualify for semis

OKOTOKS, AB – The Medicine Hat High Mohawks will have redemption on their mind Saturday, looking to win a Southern Alberta High School Baseball League title.

The Mohawks ran over the Notre Dame Hounds 12-2 to win their semi-final matchup, advancing to Saturday afternoon’s provincial final in dominating fashion.

Taking advantage of some sloppy play from Notre Dame, the Mohawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning with four of those runs coming off of errors.

Medicine Hat extended its lead to 8-0 in the second inning following RBI-singles from Kobe Coderre and Hayden Hall, before making it an 11-0 game off a double from Tory Nelson with the bases loaded in the third.

After the Hounds closed the gap to 11-2, Medicine Hat put the semi-final tilt out of reach with a pop-out from Coderre that brought in lead off man Kayden Hleucka.

Ashtyn Street and Austin Moch combined for a masterful pitching performance, allowing just two Notre Dame hits over five innings of play.

Last year, the Mohawks were taken out by the Monsignor McCoy Colts in the SAHSBL final by a 7-2 final.

The Colts meanwhile are still alive in their quest for a second consecutive provincial championship, advancing to the semi-final stage with a 13-3 drubbing of Okotoks’ Holy Trinity Academy Knights on Friday.

Kayden Berndt smacked a two-run homer for the Colts in the top of the first inning, while Reese Whelen posted three hits and five RBIs in the win.

With the game still hanging somewhat in the balance 7-3 in the top of the fifth, the Colts rolled through the entire lineup to bring in six more runs to put the contest out of reach.

On the mound, Wyatt Study pitched a complete game for McCoy with just one earned run given up on three hits while striking out three Knights batters.

McCoy will look to set up a rematch of the 2018 SAHSBL final, as they battle the top-seeded Vauxhall Vikings at 1:00 pm in Okotoks.

The winner will advance to face the Mohawks for provincial gold on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
