MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two federal Conservative politicians were at the Medicine Hat Lodge Friday to host a discussion on foreign affairs, defence and public safety policies.

Glen Motz, Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner and Deputy Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, along with Leona Alleslev, Member of Parliament for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill in Ontario, hosted the ‘fireside chat’ event.

“Today we’re going to be talking with a group of stakeholders that we’ve invited to talk about global security, global competitiveness and how all of those things flow together for public safety issues,” says Motz.

They cited issues with the current federal government, saying the liberals aren’t serious about national security, which has put the countries economy in jeopardy.

Alleslev, who serves as Shadow Minister for Global Security, says there are serious threats facing the country.

“Conflict doesn’t need to necessarily mean troops on the ground who are invading a territory because now we can see challenges around undermining our infrastructure, manipulating our elections, stealing our intellectual property,” says Alleslev. “Or other things that affect our ability to decide the future of our own country ourselves, and our ability to have a strong economy.”

Motz and Alleslev spoke with representatives from the British and Canadian militaries, first responders and defence contractors about their perspective on public safety issues.

According to Motz, he couldn’t think of a better location than Medicine Hat to host the discussion.

“With the defence research establishment here in Suffield with BATUS here and the Canadian military facility here, with the unmanned vehicle, QinetiQ with their unmanned target systems that are worldwide, we though ti was a great venue to have this sort of an event here,” says Motz. “We’re world leading in a lot of those technologies, other countries are buying products manufactured in this city and have impact on global security and we think it’s important to have the conversation here.”

Canada’s federal election is just months away on October 21, 2019.
