LONDON — It’s not a totally unexpected move, but British Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement that she is stepping down as leader of the Conservatives on June 7th has sparked speculation as to who may take up the mantle.

May has bowed to relentless pressure from her party to quit over her failure to take Britain out of the European Union on schedule.

A list of prominent names for contention is expected to swell in the coming days, including a pair of foreign secretaries under May, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt.

French President Emmanuel Macron says it is too soon to speculate on the consequences of Theresa May’s decision to resign.

But he adds France is ready to work with a new British prime minister on all European issues — which would include Britain’s exit from the European Union.

The pound and British stocks rose on May’s announcement on hopes it might end the Brexit stalemate, even though analysts warn it could simply mean another delay.
