Cypress County remains under fire restriction

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB — With wildfire season in full swing, Cypress County continues to remain under a fire restriction.

The restriction, which came into effect March 1, will last until October 31. Council voted on the restriction following the Hilda wildfire in October 2017.

Under the restriction, all existing fire permits are cancelled, and no new ones are issued.

The only permitted fires are internal fireplaces, incinerators on farms, burning barrels, solid and liquid fuel barbecues, wood pellet smokers, recreational camp fires and fires in approved facilities and appliances in designated camping and recreational areas.

Fireworks are also prohibited under the restriction.

The County of 40 Mile, which includes Bow Island, has had a fire advisory in place since April 4. Dry, windy and warm conditions were present in the region at the time of the advisory, and the county says there is a high risk of fire spreading during windy conditions due to dead and dry grass throughout the region.

Those performing burning must follow the directions of the fire permit, monitor their fire continuously while it’s burning, and immediately extinguish it if winds hit 15 kilometres per hour.

The advisory in the County of 40 Mile will be in place until further notice.
