MEDICINE HAT, AB — If your traffic light turns from green to red quickly today, there is nothing to be worried about.

The city is performing tests of the First Responders Preemption system at all intersections in Medicine Hat on Tuesday. The tests started on Friday.

The system allows first responders, such as police officers and firefighters, to change traffic lights to green to allow them to arrive at a scene quicker.

According to a release, a city van will drive through the intersection with flashing lights on when it turns green, and a few seconds later, it will turn red again. The city says the lights will return to normal during the next traffic cycle.
