MEDICINE HAT, AB — One local oil company is applauding Jason Kenney’s vow to scrap the carbon tax by the end of the month.

On Monday, Alberta’s new premier said the Carbon Tax Repeal Act will be introduced during next week’s legislature sitting.

MOI resource group, based in Medicine Hat, oversees Komat Drilling and Riker Oilfield Hauling.

Company president Kerwin Mondor says although the carbon tax’s effect on the company was minimal, axing it is still positive.

“Even a one percent increase in our costs makes a bit of a difference so we didn’t like it but it didn’t break us,” says Mondor.

Due to the low financial impact of the tax, Mondor says getting rid of it will have more of a psychological benefit.

“Scrapping the carbon tax is more psychological than anything just saying ‘were here to do business, we’re here to produce our resources in a responsible way’ and to me, that’s what its all about.”

Mondor adds it’s better to keep money in the hands of people and business, rather than with the bureaucratic government.

“Yeah it’s a negligible cost but it’s money, it’s a tax, it’s money that’s coming from people that handle money well, I think we corporately handle our money very well and it’s putting it into that hands of government who in my mind doesn’t handle it as well as we do, not as efficiently.”

Premier Kenney also said a bill to cut corporate income tax by one third will be be rolled out next week.
