MEDICINE HAT, AB – The latest tour through the ‘Gas City’ for Saskatchewan’s Notre Dame Hounds ended with a Friday night split with the Monsignor McCoy Colts on the diamond at Jeffries Park.

The Colts gave up 13 runs in the third inning alone in a 20-11 loss in league action to the Hounds in the opening tilt, before regrouping in the late game to pick up two points with a 16-10 win.

McCoy got off to a good start in the opening game with a 4-3 lead after two innings off a Reese Whelen RBI single, but things quickly fell apart for the Colts in the top of the third.

Taking advantage of a number of errors, the Hounds were able to convert six hits into a baker’s dozen runs to jump well into the lead 16-4.

Whelen picked up his second RBI single of the afternoon in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 16-8 gap, however Notre Dame punched right back with three runs of their own in the fourth.

Redcliff’s own Kaitlyn Ross pitched a complete game for the Hounds with six earned runs given up on 15 hits for the win, while Colts starter Ty Brooks had a tough outing with eight earned runs allowed over two and one-third innings of work.

Whelen was one of the bright spots in the loss for McCoy though, going a perfect four-for-four at the dish with four runs coming off his bat.

The Colts came out flying in the back half of the series, picking up RBI singles from Kayden Berndt and Joel Herron before the first out of the game was even recorded.

With the score sitting at 6-0 for the Colts with the bases loaded, Whelen made his mark on the night once again with a triple to clear the bases and put McCoy up 9-0.

After Notre Dame cut the deficit to 9-3 in the bottom half of the first, the Colts responded with another RBI single from Cole Rath to stretch the lead to eight runs.

Erasing all doubt of a Hounds comeback, RBI singles from Berndt and Herron in the top of the fourth sealed the bounce-back victory for the Medicine Hat ballplayers.

Seven members of the Colts drove in runs in the late game, including Berndt’s four RBIs which led all players on Friday night.

On the mound, Jaden Schwindt was dialed in with just five earned runs allowed on four hits over four and one-third innings of work, while striking out four.

A bit of a break awaits the Colts as their next league game doesn’t come until May 20 against the Eagle Butte Talons at Jeffries Park.

As for the Hounds, they wrap up their weekend road trip in Medicine Hat on Saturday afternoon with a pair of games against the Medicine Hat High Mohawks.
