Locals find podium at badminton championships

LETHBRIDGE, AB — Several Medicine Hat area badminton players found the podium at the Junior High Badminton Championships over the weekend.

In the bantam division, Gerhard Knauer from Ecole Les Cypres took first place in the bantam boys singles, while Kapri Booker from Parkside School won first in the bantam girls singles. Addie Selk, also from Parkside, finished third in the bantam girls category.

The midget division saw Alan Janzen from Senator Gershaw won the boys singles category, while Kiara Reesor of Irvine won the girls singles category.

In the midget doubles division, two local school finished in third place. Justin Jager and Noah Hawkes from Irvine School finished in third in boys doubles, while Jordan Weisgerber and Kylee Waldegger from Notre Dame Academy won third in the girls category.

Irvine School also claimed first in midget mixed doubles, with Kierra Zentner and Axton Ferguson representing the school in the category. Silas Currie and Audyn Mattaur from Dr. Roy Wilson won bronze in the category.

In the juvenile division, Tyler Miller from St. Mary’s School and Roman Cherniak from Notre Dame finished in first and second place, respectively, in the boys division. Francine Seba from Notre Dame won third place in the girls division.

Finally, in juvenile girls doubles, Kailey Duchscherer and Marin Sinclair from Notre Dame finished in first place. Zach Ferguson and Quinlan McElroy-O’Driscoll from Ecole Les Cypress won a silver medal in the juvenile boys doubles category.

Irvine School and Notre Dame Academy are also taking home banners for finishing in first place in the aggregate rankings in the 3J and 4J divisions, respectively.
