MEDICINE HAT, AB — United Conservative Party MLA Drew Barnes has written to new Health Minister Tyler Shandro, asking for funding for a supervised consumption site in Medicine Hat to be reallocated, and its development suspended.

Barnes, who represents Cypress-Medicine Hat, posted a copy of the letter to Shandro on his official Facebook page Friday afternoon.

“I have heard from multitudes of constituents and stakeholders in the Medicine Hat and surrounding community that a much preferred and more effective use of tax payer’s dollars would be to reallocate the resources into additional counselling, alternate types of counselling such as street counselling, and enhanced detox services,” the letter reads.

In the letter, which can be read in full below, Barnes says consultations with stakeholders and Medicine Hat residents need to be reopened, and development of the site be suspended.

HIV Community Link announced in January the supervised consumption site would be located at 502 South Railway Street. The site has caused controversy and concerns for nearby residents and business owners over the amount of consultation done before the announcement.

A date for its opening is not yet known.
