CYPRESS COUNTY, AB — A 42-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing multiple charges after being pulled over by Redcliff RCMP on Tuesday.

According to a release from Redcliff RCMP, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers were conducting patrols of Highway 1 in Cypress County, when a vehicle was allegedly observed travelling at 178 kilometres/hour in a 110 kilometre/hour zone. Officers activated the emergency lights, and the vehicle allegedly continued past the fully marked police vehicle at a high rate of speed and continued for approximately two minutes before pulling over and stopping.

When the vehicle was stopped, the driver allegedly failed a mandatory alcohol screening, and allegedly could not produce a licence as it was suspended. The vehicle also did not have valid insurance.

The driver was transported to the Redcliff Detachment, and subsequent breath tests allegedly resulted in readings at more than double the legal limit of .08.

The man is facing charges of impaired operation of a conveyance, operating of a conveyance while having 80 milligrams of alcohol or more in 100 millilitres of blood, driving while unauthorized, speeding, and driving an uninsured motor vehicle on the highway.

The vehicle has been impounded for 60 days, and the man’s licence has been further suspended.

The man has not been named as charges have not been officially sworn against him. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on May 22.
