RED DEER, AB - It’s safe to say the Medicine Hat Sun Devils have a bit of rust to shake off defensively, opening their Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season with a blowout loss.

Taking on the Red Deer Renegades on the road, the Sun Devils were torched for nine goals in the second period alone in a 21-7 stomping in their first game of the Junior ‘B’ season.

Midway through the first period the Sun Devils held a 2-1 lead with goals from Izaak Loran and Noah Weimer, but that’s as close as Medicine Hat would come to two points.

Red Deer added two more goals in the final five minutes of the first, taking a 3-2 lead into the second period which was dominated by the Renegades.

Nine goals were pumped past the Sun Devils, while Red Deer also scored the first three goals of the third period to control the contest by a 15-2 count.

Loran and Weimer responded with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 15-4, but the Renegades quickly erased the comeback attempt with two markers of their own.

Weimer completed his hat-trick bid with 4:09 left in the game, however it wasn’t enough with Red Deer tacking on two more goals to come away with the victory.

The Sun Devils will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up their season-opening weekend with a road game in Calgary against the Axemen at 12:30 pm.
