Medicine Hat getting much needed precipitation

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The weather rolling into Medicine Hat should be beneficial for local farmers.

The expected snow and rain follows an April with a precipitation level way below average.

“It has been drier,” says Kyle Fougere, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. “It has been warmer than average so far but this system is going to be pretty impressive over the weekend.”

In April, the average precipitation in Medicine Hat is 23 millimetres. So far, the city has seen one millimetre.

However, the rain started Friday morning, and is forecast to continue unto Saturday with temperatures cooling off for snow on Sunday.

“It’s looking like it will look pretty ugly on Sunday and there definitely is the possibility to get over 10 cm of snow for Medicine Hat,” says Fougere. “There’s still a lot of variability in the system and we have to wait to see where the low pressure system is actually going to develop.”

Fougere says the increase in precipitation should continue into May.

“We are going to get a significant amount of precipitation this weekend, looking forward we do tend to get more precipitation in May,” says Fougere. “May we tend to get 42mm on average.”

Fougere adds Medicine Hat will likely see 50 km/h winds with gusts up to 80 km/h on Sunday.
