MEDICINE HAT, AB — Aurora Cannabis says it will do its best to help reduce the smell from its new facility in Medicine Hat.

A Canadian Press story published Wednesday discusses the company’s concerns about the smell from the Aurora Sky facility in Leduc. Several complaints have been made about the odour from the plant being noticeable at the Edmonton International Airport.

Cam Battley, chief corporate officer with Aurora Cannabis, says there will likely be little impact of the smell in Medicine Hat.

“When you’re growing anything, there is a possibility that there is going to a smell,” he said. “If you’re in an agricultural area, you’ll smell the scent of agriculture. If you’re in an industrial area, you’ll smell the smell of the industry.”

Battley says the company is concerned about its impact on neighbours, and says they will consult with the community and nearby businesses about any impacts from the facility.

He adds they don’t expect any impact from smell in Medicine Hat, due to its location in an industrial area.

“The scene doesn’t really travel that far,” he said.

As for the odour, Battley says the company used advanced HVAC and Air Filtration to help mitigate the odour in Edmonton, and says those systems will be improved by the time Aurora Sun opens in 2020.

“What we’re doing is we’re pursuing a program of continuous improvement to do with odour mitigation, exactly what we’ve done with cannabis cultivation,” he said. “We have developed the most advanced cannabis cultivation technology in the world, and we are actually building right the state of the art, with respect to odour mitigation.”

Battley adds people will not contract a high from the smell from the plant, noting it’s just the smell of vegetation, and does not include cannabinoids.
