Major infrastructure project begins this week

MEDICINE HAT — Work to replace the 105 year old sanitary sewer mains beneath the Allowance Avenue overpass at Elm street will begin this week.

Starting tomorrow, crews will begin preparations for the project, which means Elm Street will be open to local traffic only from Woodman Avenue west to the cul de sac on the edge of the overpass.

Once initial preparations are complete, travel on the overpass will be converted to two-way traffic for about 3 weeks, depending on good weather and no unforseen delays.

Meridian crossovers installed at the north and south ends of the overpass will facilitate traffic moving through the detour during construction.

The actual replacement of the sanitary means will be done using a directional drilling method under the overpass.

The method doesn’t involve digging a trench and the project should be done in 5 weeks.
