Spring speeding becoming an issue in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat, AB — With no ice and less debris on the streets and highways, drivers in and around Medicine Hat have been driving faster and faster of late.

That can lead to serious and even fatal collisions.

As spring moves into summer traffic Sergeant Clark White says that Medicine Hat Police will be out and more visible looking for speeders in some select high speed locations.

“Our April safety traffic topic is speeding. And every year we try and target it early to try and prevent tragedies later on.”

He says the yearly pattern of speeding in spring can turn a regular drive into a very dangerous one and thinks that along with drivers becoming more confident with the clear roads, the larger amount of cars and motorcycles on the road is a factor.

“Every spring we tend to see an increase with speeds and aggressive driving overall and all over the city. We get complaints from the public in playground zones, we get complaints about loud and racing vehicles and it’s a common theme every spring.”

Sergeant White also said that if you see someone using excessive speed to be the “best witness you can” by taking their license plate and reporting it.
