Medicine Hat, AB– Before voters hit the polls for the provincial election on Tuesday, over 160,000 elementary and high school students took part in the Student Vote.

On Monday, when the students cast their votes, Medicine Hat High School teacher Sheldon Regier said the Student Vote results and real results tend to be almost identical.

“I think we’ve found in the past, when the student vote has been run, the student results tend to parallel real results fairly closely,” he said. “I think young people might be a bit more progressive on average then their adults in their lives. But overall their seems to be quite a similarity”

Regier was correct.

Just like Tuesday’s election, the UCP won a majority government in the student election.

Following the student vote, Jason Kenney would be the new Premier with the UCP winning 49 seats. The NDP would form the opposition with 35 seats. The Alberta Party earned three seats.

Students in Brooks-Medicine Hat voted Michaela Glasgo into the legislature. She received almost 50 per cent of the vote.

Jim Black, a teacher running for the Alberta Party was runner up in the Student Vote.

Independent conservative Todd Beasley rounded out the top three while the NDP’s candidate Lynn MacWilliam, who was the runner up in the riding on Tuesday, finished in fourth place.

In Cypress-Medicine Hat, the students also elected Drew Barnes with 61.51 per cent of the vote.

Barnes, seeking his third term in Edmonton, beat the NDP’s Peter Mueller by over 800 votes.

Colette Smithers with the Alberta Party came third, mirroring Tuesday’s results.
