BREAKING: United Conservative Party to form government

Apr 16, 2019 | 8:41 PM

EDMONTON, AB — Alberta will have a new premier.

Multiple outlets, including CHAT Television, Global News and CBC are projecting the United Conservative Party, led by Jason Kenney, will form government.

It is the first time in the province’s history that an incumbent government was defeated following its first term.

As of 9:12 p.m., the UCP is projected to win 63 seats in the Alberta legislature, while the NDP is expected to hold 24.

The UCP dominated in rural Alberta and Calgary, while the NDP remained strong in Edmonton.

Leader Jason Kenney was elected in the Calgary-Lougheed riding, while NDP leader Rachel Notley won her seat in Edmonton-Strathcona.

At present, Alberta Party leader Stephen Mandel and Alberta Liberal Party leader David Khan have not won seats, and their parties are projected to lose their seats in the legislature.

Khan, running in Calgary-Mountain View, which has been a Liberal seat since 2008, is currently running in third place, behind the NDP’s Kathleen Ganley, and the UCP’s Jeremy Wong.

Mandel, running in Edmonton-McClung, is projected to finish in third place. Lorne Dach of the NDP is projected to win the riding.

More to come.
