Local man trying to bring ice cream bikes back

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local man inspired by nostalgia is trying bring back a certain kind of bike that hasn’t been seen on the streets for years.

He’s asking for the public’s help in bringing ice cream bikes to the neighbourhoods of Medicine Hat.

“So we started froze last year and we were really well received, people kind of remembered the days of the Dickie Dee bike and you don’t see that around too much anymore,” says Weigel. “So we’ve been able to take this to a lot of events and what not but haven’t been able to get out into the community which is what we’re trying to achieve with this booster campaign with ATB to raise money for some ice cream bikes.”

Weigel is hoping to fundraise $5,000 to purchase three bikes, and bring tasty treats to Hatters.

“The hope if we reach our goal is we have our manufacturer lined up for these bikes and hopefully get them by early to mid June,” says Weigel. “You’ll see them around town, in your neighbourhood as well as parks and community events as well.”

Although his bikes won’t have the bells like Dickie Dee, they’ll play their own little jingle, hoping to invoke some good feelings in whoever he passes.

However, Weigel’s online fundraiser has been active for a couple of months now and he still has a long way to go.

“The response has been okay, people aren’t obviously thinking about ice cream and summer yet,” says Weigel. “It’s still a little chilly but no snow and summers coming soon so we hope that these last few days of the campaign can be really good for us.”

The campaign ends on April 16, and less than 10 per-cent of the goal has been raised.

Weigel is trying to incentive donations by offering rewards, such as a free popsicle with a $4 donation, and a free box for $35.

“Don’t think of it as a donation but think of it more as a reward so everyone that donates does get the option to choose their own reward.”
