Mohawks trio commits to Rattlers men’s basketball team

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Next fall, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers will have even more of a local feel thanks to three new commits familiar to Medicine Hat basketball fans.

Three graduating members of the Medicine Hat High School Mohawks will be pursuing post-secondary basketball at MHC next year, with the Rattlers announcing the commitments of Eidan Jonker, Fred Kabore, and Reece Mulder.

Jonker battled injuries during his Grade 12 season, but was still able to average 13.7 points per game as the Mohawks top shooting guard.

Kabore was a breakout star for Hat High with a 15.1 points per game average in his senior year, while Mulder averaged just under five points per game off the bench.

Rattlers head coach Rich Humphrey said they’re ecstatic to see local players wanting to advance their basketball careers at MHC.

“We’ve actually recruited quite a few Medicine Hat kids in the past,” said Humphrey. “They just haven’t panned out, or decided to go to college, or have gone to college elsewhere, they haven’t played. But, to see them now come in our gym and want to be here, it’s really exciting times for us.”

The trio will likely form the basis of Medicine Hat’s rookie crop for the fall, as Humphrey said he’ll continue his recruiting throughout the summer.

“They’re all good and different in their own way, I’m excited for those kids to get an opportunity to play,” he said.

They’ll join former Mohawk Nick Murschell on the Rattlers roster, who is set to enter his third season wearing the black and yellow.

Humphrey said Murschell will serve as a mentor to Jonker, Kabore, and Mulder by sharing that connection from Hat High.

“Nicky is one of my favourite kids to coach,” he said. “I’m pretty hard on him, I expect big things from him because he is such a smart kid, that there is some pressure put on him at times. But, to see him now mentoring these young guys, it’s quite a sight to see.”

The Rattlers are expecting to only return five players next season from the team that earned a fourth place finish at the ACAC Championships last month.

Humphrey said the first few months of the 2019-2020 season could be tough, but is confident in the core that will be back in the fall.

“It’s going to be a learning curve for the young kids with the intensity, the physicality, and just the expectation of what Rattlers basketball is,” he said. “I’m expecting some growing pains, we may have to take a couple lumps, but once we figure it out we’ll be a good team again.”
