Slack and first night performances complete at Broncs and Honky Tonks Spring Rodeo

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A brand new rodeo season kicked off in Medicine Hat on Friday, with the 2019 Broncs and Honky Tonks Spring Indoor Rodeo getting underway with the slack and first evening performances.

Medicine Hat’s Tyler Popescul was the lone local competing in the tie-down roping slack event, posting a time of 10.1 seconds.

He however sits out of the money entering the second day of competition, with Wimborne’s Blair Smith leading the pack with a time of 8.2 seconds.

Plenty of local content in the team roping slack, with the duo of Medicine Hat’s Trent Tunke and Jesse Popescul netting a time of 9.8 seconds.

That was followed by Dalton Kraft of Irvine and Kevin Schreiner of Medicine Hat finishing a second behind them at 10.8 seconds, however both are still out of the top-six standings.

It was a tough day for the team of Redcliff’s Wyatt Stuber and Medicine Hat’s Clint Schreiner, the duo of Cypress County’s Braidy Davies and Saskatchewan’s Brady Chappel, and the team of Tyler Popescul and Eckville’s Clayton Smith, who all failed to register a time in the slack.

The Levi Hughes and Logan Wharry squad out of British Columbia hold the top position, leading the event with a blazing time of 4.5 seconds.

Four locals were listed in the ladies barrel racing slack competition, with Chelsey Carlier of Medicine Hat leading all locals with a time of 13.556 seconds.

She was followed by Medicine Hat’s Cora Wutch with a time of 13.696 seconds, Bassano’s Sandra McGinnis’ time of 14.825 seconds, and Medicine Hat product Kareen Warren who did not register a time.

Diane Skocdopole out of Big Valley sits in first in the ladies barrel racing heading into Saturday, crossing the finish line with a time of 12.814 seconds.

On the other side of the provincial border, Maple Creek’s Michael Gordon was the lone local competitor in the evening event, but failed to record a score in saddle bronc.

Circuit veteran Clay Elliott from Nanton is the day one lead with a score of 88 points, followed by Nicholas Patterson’s mark of 77.5 points.

Other leaders include Cadogan’s Clint Laye in bareback riding with a score of 86.5 points, American Jason Thomas’ 4.2 seconds in steer wrestling, and Provost’s Klayton Lakevold was the lone competitor to stay on his animal in bull riding with a score of 82 points.
