Leaders making plans to visit Medicine Hat during campaign

Apr 4, 2019 | 4:19 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Party leaders will be descending on Medicine Hat heading into the final week of the provincial election.

The United Conservative Party has confirmed leader Jason Kenney will be in Medicine Hat on Monday, for an event at Drew Barnes campaign office at 3363 Dunmore Road. The event includes a barbecue at the office, and begins at 11:30 a.m.

The NDP responded to our question via email on Thursday, noting next week’s schedule has not been finalized.

“Southeast Alberta has been a priority of Rachel Notley’s NDP government, building and modernizing new schools, creating more than 200 new $25 a day child care spaces, and investing over $2 million to help protect Medicine Hat and surrounding areas from flooding,” the statement from a party spokesperson reads. “As you may know, it’s been a busy campaign and Rachel has been trying to get to as many communities as possible. The schedule for the next week hasn’t been finalized yet as Rachel works to talk to as many Albertans as she can about who can be trusted to fight for what matters to everyday families in Medicine Hat and across the province.”

CHAT News has also reached out to Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan. A spokesperson for the party says Khan plans to be in Medicine Hat sometime next week, though a date is not yet known.

During the 2015 election, leaders from three of the political parties made campaign stops in Medicine Hat.

Jim Prentice, then the leader of the Progressive Conservatives, stopped in Medicine hat on April 16.

Wildrose Leader Brian Jean appeared in Medicine Hat on April 17, for a campaign rally for Wildrose candidates Drew Barnes and Val Olson.

Rachel Notley also made a campaign stop in Medicine Hat on April 29, speaking at Bob Wanner’s campaign office in downtown Medicine Hat.

UPDATE: The Alberta Party, who originally told us they would be in Medicine Hat on Monday, emailed CHAT on Friday, saying they will be in Drumheller and Stettler that day instead. We’ve reached out to find out if they will be in Medicine Hat next week, and will update as soon as we know.
