MEDICINE HAT, AB — Premier Rachel Notley released the NDP’s election platform on Sunday afternoon.

The platform highlighted the NDP’s plans to improve health care, education and the economy.

Cypress-Medicine Hat NDP candidate Peter Mueller believes that these promises are good news for those in Medicine Hat and surrounding area.

“It’s a message of hope, it’s a message of taking of taking care of families, taking care of looking for jobs, taking care of the economy,” said Mueller while speaking of the platform.

Mueller, a former teacher, believes that the NDP’s plans for education are something that will benefit students and teachers at all levels in Medicine Hat.

“Keep classes smaller, look after the needs of the children, look after the needs of post-secondary students as well,” said Mueller.

Mueller also spoke of the NDP’s review of the curriculum. He says it took about 10,000 hours of consulting and seventy-thousand participants.

“I’m a little bit worried about what the other people may do with it. To talk about trashing or shredding this curriculum is nonsensical, is dangerous,” said Mueller.

As the UCP also released their platform, Mueller believes that “if you compare the two platforms one is humane, thoughtful and hopeful and the other one isn’t.”

“There’s no mention of the environment in their platform. There is mention of taking care of the wealthy corporations by giving them $700-million dollar tax breaks at the expense of teachers, students, nurses, patients,” said Mueller.

The NDP’s platform also outlined their plans to diersify Alberta’s economy. In a community filled with solar panels, wind farms and oil and gas workers, Mueller believes this will strengthen the economy in Medicine Hat and surrounding areas.

“I think I read that there is, just in the fields (in the Medicine Hat area), there’s $1.3-billion dollars coming in the next few years, that’s 2000 jobs. Permanent jobs. That’s going a long way to helping this area as far as economic need is concerned.”
